History as a hotel
In 1871 the Austrian Southern Railway Company opened its line through the Puster Valley . Since their utilization was initially unsatisfactory, one measure was the construction of railway hotels . The "Hotel Toblach" was built in 1877 and 1878 on the south side next to the Toblach train station . The architect was the house architect of the southern railway company Wilhelm von Flattich . The building took on its final shape as a luxury hotel, in which crowned heads such as the Kings Albert of Saxony and Milan of Serbia stayed , after various extensions, extensions and modernizations in 1903. Architecturally, the building was linked with its neoclassical facades made of exposed brick with wooden-decorated gables Elements of the industrial architecture of that time with those of the so-called " Swiss wood style ".
Another prominent guest was the composer and opera director Gustav Mahler , who stayed at the Grand Hotel Toblach for three summers from 1908. In Dobbiaco he composed the song of the earth and his symphony no.9 .
Similar to other hotels of the railway company such as the Südbahnhotel am Semmering and the Hotel Kvarner in Abbazia , the Grand Hotel Toblach experienced an eventful history and use over the course of the 20th century and slowly declined. In the First World War it served as a hospital. In the course of the global economic crisis , bankruptcy had to be opened and there were numerous changes of ownership. In the course of time the hotel housed the umbrella organization of the fascist party organizations , later the cartographic and geographic service of the Italian army and the papal relief organization. For a longer period of time it was a rest home for children from needy families.
