The Tre Cime Natural Park ( Italian Parco Naturale Tre Cime ) is a regional park in the South Tyrolean Dolomites ( Italy ). It was founded in 1981 and covers an area of ​​11,891 hectares, divided into the municipalities of Innichen , Sexten and Toblach .

History and facilities

The park was founded in 1981 as the Sexten Dolomites Nature Park . In 2009 it was recognized by UNESCO as part of the Dolomites World Heritage . In 2010 it was renamed the Drei Zinnen nature park . The “Three Peaks Nature Park House” is located in the Grand Hotel cultural center in Toblach (location: ) and provides information about the geology, natural and cultural landscapes in the nature park and the history of the war in the Dolomites .

Expansion and habitats

The Drei Zinnen nature park is located in the eastern Dolomites, in the South Tyrolean part of the Sesto Dolomites . It is bounded in the north by the Pustertal , in the east by the Sextental and in the west by the Höhlensteintal , where it connects directly to the Fanes-Senes-Braies nature reserve . In the south it ends on the border with the province of Belluno . The Innerfeldtal and the Fischlein valley branch off from the Sextental and lead deep into the nature park. The numerous mountains are in turn assigned to subgroups. a. the eponymous Drei Zinnen in the south, the Haunold group in the north and the Sexten sundial in the southeast. The highest peak in the area is the Dreischusterspitze ( 3145  m ). The sources of the Rienz are located near the Drei Zinnen , the largest standing body of water in the nature park is the Dürrensee .

The nature park is mostly in the high mountains; about two thirds of its area consists of dolomite rocks and debris cones , where only pioneer plants find their habitats. Different alpine lawn communities ( cushion sedge , blue grass ) and, in lower elevations, coniferous forests ( larch , spruce , pine ) and larch meadows are characteristic.
