On June 26, 2009, parts of the Dolomites were recognized by UNESCO as a serial world natural heritage.

The nine sub-areas of the Dolomites World Heritage Site form a series of unique mountain landscapes of extraordinary beauty. ... The sublime, monumental and colorful landscapes of the Dolomites have always fascinated a large number of travelers and have been the source of numerous scientific and artistic interpretations.

The core area is 141,910 hectares, plus 89,266 hectares of buffer zone. All areas were previously protected as national parks , nature parks or Natura 2000 areas.
