List of UNESCO World Heritage
On this page the overview articles about the UNESCO world heritage of individual states are listed. The current World Heritage Sites are listed there as well as the World Heritage candidates currently or previously on the tentative list .
background
The UNESCO World Heritage includes sites recognized by UNESCO under the World Heritage Convention of 1972. As of March 2018, 193 signatory states have ratified the World Heritage Convention, including 189 of the 193 member states of the United Nations . Liechtenstein , which is also not a UNESCO member, is still missing , Nauru , Somalia and Tuvalu . This is complemented by Niue , the Cook Islands and the Palestinian Autonomous Territories , which are members of UNESCO but not the United Nations, as well as the Holy See , which represents the State of Vatican City externally and has observer status at both UNESCO and the United Nations.
The World Heritage Committee maintains a World Heritage List in which the recognized World Heritage sites are listed. The individual world heritage sites are grouped there by state, the individual states are grouped according to the UNESCO regions . As of November 2019, the list contains 1121 World Heritage sites, which are spread across 167 of the 193 states party to the World Heritage Convention, with 39 of these sites being cross-border or transnational , i.e. two or more states. 869 sites are World Heritage Sites, 213 World Natural Heritage Sites and 39 mixed sites. Two sites have so far been removed from the World Heritage List
The tentative lists of the individual states are also deposited with the World Heritage Committee . In its tentative list, each state lists its possible candidates for UNESCO World Heritage. From this list, he may nominate a maximum of two sites per year for inclusion in the World Heritage List. As of March 2018, 183 of the contracting states submitted a tentative list. Altogether there are 1703 sites from 177 countries, the remaining tentative lists are currently empty.
World heritage according to UNESCO region
In the following, the 193 signatory states to the World Heritage Convention are listed with links to the corresponding overview articles on the World Heritage of this state, grouped according to the UNESCO regions used by the World Heritage Commission (which in individual cases differ from the eponymous continents). Some signatory states do not yet have a World Heritage Site, but they have already submitted a tentative list. Other states have so far only ratified or acceded to the World Heritage Convention, i.e. they are signatory states to the World Heritage Convention, but have not yet submitted a tentative list. Taiwan is not a UNESCO member, but has already drawn up a list of potential World Heritage Sites.
