Country statistics of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Worldwide distribution of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The UNESCO keeps a list of World Heritage , are listed on the all sites that are world significantly due to their uniqueness, authenticity and integrity and are proposed by the States where they are for the inclusion on the list. The contractual basis for this is the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (German: Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage , in short: World Heritage Convention ). In addition, UNESCO maintains a Red List of World Heritage in Danger, which highlights world heritage sites whose existence and validity are threatened by serious and specific dangers such as damage, destruction or disappearance. UNESCO calls for extraordinary conservation efforts for these sites.

Current status

As of July 2018, the World Heritage Convention was ratified or accepted by 193 signatory states. The World Heritage List includes 1092 sites in 167 countries. Of these, 845 are listed as world cultural heritage and 209 as world natural heritage, a further 38 sites are listed as mixed cultural and natural heritage sites. 37 of these sites are cross-border or transnational , i.e. assigned to two or more states. 54 sites are registered in the Red List. Of the 26 contracting states that have not yet established a World Heritage Site , 19 have submitted a tentative list listing the objects that the respective state intends to propose to the World Heritage Committee for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Country list

The list shows the signatory states to the World Heritage Convention in alphabetical order, together with the date on which the convention came into force in the respective signatory state. In addition, the UNESCO region is indicated, which does not necessarily reflect the geographical allocation. The five UNESCO regions are: Africa (AF), Arab States (AS), Asia and Pacific (AP), Europe and North America (ENA), and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAK). The following columns show the total number (Σ) as well as the number of cultural (K), natural (N) and mixed world heritage sites (K / N) of the respective state, as well as the subtotals of cross-border and transnational as well as endangered world heritage sites on the Rote List. The total number of candidates and the date of the last update of the tentative list are given under tentative list (TL).

Cross-border and transnational sites belonging to two or more countries are included in the number of all participating countries, which means that the individual sites are counted several times. The database is based on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Center.

Note: The list is sortable. By clicking on the arrow symbols in the column header, the list can be sorted in ascending and descending order according to the respective category. As of September 2018, Italy is the country with the most world heritage sites in total (54 sites) and also with the most cultural sites (49) while the People's Republic of China has the most natural sites (14).

Remarks

  1. Jerusalem : The old city of Jerusalem in East Jerusalem , annexed by Jordan in 1950 and by Israel in 1980 , which is also claimed by the Palestinian territories , had been proposed by Jordan for inclusion in UNESCO World Heritage. In 1981 it was added to the World Heritage List as a World Heritage Site under the name Old City and City Walls of Jerusalem , although it was emphasized that this decision had no implication about Jerusalem's affiliation to a specific state. The world heritage site is not assigned to any state, but entered separately in the world heritage list under "Jerusalem (on the proposal of Jordan)". Nevertheless, it is assigned to the UNESCO region "Arab States" on the website of the World Heritage Center. In 1982, again at the suggestion of Jordan, it was put on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger.
  2. KosovoKosovo Kosovo : Kosovo is not a signatory to the World Heritage Convention. The World Heritage Sites in Kosovo are listed under Serbia on the UNESCO list.
  3. TaiwanRepublic of China (Taiwan) Taiwan : The Republic of China (Taiwan) is not a UNESCO member, but has drawn up a list of potential World Heritage Sites, see World Heritage in Taiwan .
  4. Vatican cityVatican Vatican City : Not the State of Vatican City, but the Holy See , which represents it externally, has signed the World Heritage Convention. Accordingly, the Vatican World Heritage Sites are listed under the Holy See on the UNESCO list. They also include areas outside of Vatican City.
