196 The Río Plátano biosphere reserve is one of the few remaining tropical rainforests in Central America . The reserve extends over approximately 5,000 km² and extends from the Caribbean coast up to 1,326 m. On the one hand it has a rich flora and fauna.

However, illegal logging, slash and burn , increasing pressure from agriculture, a planned hydropower plant and inadequate management endanger the forests and in 2011 led to the biosphere reserve being put on the list of endangered world heritage.
