Under the title The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier - an Outstanding Contribution to the “Modern Movement” , UNESCO has combined outstanding works by the Swiss-French architect and urban planner Le Corbusier into a transnational , serial world cultural heritage . The 17 selected objects exemplify the development of the new architectural language of expression of modernism during the 20th century. The works were created over a period of half a century, in a phase that Le Corbusier called "patient research" (patient search or patient research) and are spread over seven countries on three continents. With ten individual properties, the focus is on France , with a further four properties in Europe, including two in Switzerland and one each in Belgium and Germany ; outside Europe, Argentina , India and Japan each have one site. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List at the 40th meeting of the World Heritage Committee on June 17, 2016.

Development up to enrollment

In January 2008 France entered fourteen buildings and facilities by Le Corbusier on the French tentative list for the registration of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO . This is a prerequisite for a process for recognition as a World Heritage site. Other UNESCO member states joined in: Nine works by Le Corbusier from six other countries were nominated as candidates for inclusion in the world cultural heritage under the title The urbanistic and architectural work of Le Corbusier ( French Œuvre urbaine et architecturale de Le Corbusier ). The list included structures and facilities from Argentina, Belgium, Germany, France, India, Japan and Switzerland.

In 2009 the World Heritage Committee decided to postpone the treatment and recommended a revision by 2012. The reasoning should be improved both for the choice of buildings and for Le Corbusier's influence on architecture and urban planning in the 20th century. Accordingly, a new application was submitted in January 2011 with only nineteen structures and facilities left. Of the four objects that were deleted, two were in France and two in Switzerland. But even this candidacy did not find a majority in the committee. The reason for the rejection said, among other things, that it had not yet been proven that Le Corbusier's work actually had outstanding global importance.

However, at the 40th meeting of the World Heritage Committee on June 17, 2016, it was entered on the World Heritage List. The world heritage site includes 17 excellent buildings by Le Corbusier. These include two houses in the Stuttgart Weißenhofsiedlung in Germany, the “ Clarté ” apartment building in Geneva and the “ Villa Le Lac ”, also known as “Petite Maison”, in Corseaux ( Canton Vaud ) in Switzerland .
