In addition to the beech trees, there are Japanese cake trees ( Katsura ), Kalopanax septemlobus ( Harigiri ), Japanese hop beech trees ( Ostrya japonica , Asada ) and other tree species.

The Anmonnotaki (Shadow Gate Falls) are a triple waterfall and popular attraction. Although they are part of the world cultural heritage, they are easy to reach on foot.

Animals such as the black woodpecker , the Japanese golden eagle , the crested eagle , the Japanese macaque , the Japanese dormouse and the Asiatic black bear can be found in the area.

The Shirakamidake is the highest peak in the area. It offers a beautiful view and, as it is not part of the protected area, can be reached without a permit and is equipped with toilets and a refuge.

At the foot of the Shirakami-Sanchi in Hachimori (since 2006 Happō ) in the Yamamoto district of Akita Prefecture, an open-air concert known in Japan - the Yūkyū no Mori ( 悠久 の 杜 ) - is held every year.
