Munakata ( Japanese 宗 像 市 , -shi ) is a city in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan .

geography

Munakata is west of Kitakyushu and northeast of Fukuoka .

history

Due to its geographical location, trade with Korea and China has been carried out in this region since ancient times. The city of Munakata has its origins in the amalgamation of various small towns to form Munakata (Japanese 宗 像 町, -machi) on April 1, 1954 . The appointment to the city took place on April 1, 1981 .

Attractions

  • Munakata shrine ( 宗 像 大 社 , Munakata-taisha ), which consists of the three sub- shrines Hetsumiya ( 辺 津 宮 ) near the coast, Nakatsumiya ( 中 津 宮 ) on the offshore island Ōshima and Okitsumiya ( 沖 津 宮 ) on the island Okinoshima , lying in the sea Men may only enter it once a year.
