Kurume ( Japanese 久留 米 市 , - shi ) is a city in Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan .
Kurume is known for its azaleas . The city has a flower partnership with Nagai in Yamagata Prefecture .

history
Kurume is an old castle town . From the castle Kurume from ruled in the Edo period, the Arima with a considerable income of 210,000 Koku in the province of Chikugo .
On April 1, 1889, the place was raised to an independent city ( shi ).
During the First World War, German soldiers were held here until 1920. The temple camp was established on October 4, 1914, and there was also the Korodai sub-camp, with a total of 531 inmates at the end of 1914. These were combined to form the newly built barracks camp on June 8, 1915. The maximum occupancy was 1315 men.
