Location of Kagoshima in Kagoshima Prefecture | ||
Kagoshima ( Japanese 鹿 児 島 市 , - shi ; in German also Kagoschima ) is a Japanese port city on the southwest tip of the island of Kyūshū . It is the administrative center of Kagoshima Prefecture .
The city is characterized by the food, porcelain and textile industries. Nearby is the Uchinoura Space Center . The city owns Kagoshima Airport , albeit at a considerable distance .
history
The city has been known since the 8th century. The engi-shiki mentions a Kagoshima shrine. The castle was initially called Ueyama-jō and belonged to the Ueyama. Later one finds a Tōfuku-jō whose lord was Kimotsuki Kuneshige. He was deposed in 1341 by Shimazu Sadahisa, who put his son Ujihisa there. Ujihisa left the place and settled in Aira ( Ōsumi ) next to Shibushi ( Hyūga ). Motohisa, son of Ujihisa, returned to Kagoshima and built a new castle there, which he named Shimazu-jō. Takahisa, his 9th generation descendant, built Uchi-shiro in the city. Eventually, Iehisa built the Tsurumaru-jō Castle on the site of the old Ueyama-jō. His descendants resided there until the Meiji Restoration .
Kagoshima was the city where Francisco de Xavier disembarked on August 15, 1549. In 1863 the Namamugi incident occurred in which the English admiral Kuper bombed the city in retaliation for the murder of the merchant Richardson.
The Shimazu clan was one of the great opponents of the Tokugawa and, after the Meiji Restoration, represented important politicians, among others. a. Saigō Takamori and Ōkubo Toshimichi . In 1877 the city became the center of the Satsuma rebellion . After eight months of fighting, the city was almost completely burned down, with the castle also being destroyed. Saigō, the leader of the rebellion, took his own life.
geography
The largest area of the urban area is on the west bank ( Satsuma Peninsula ) of the Kagoshima Bay, which is cut 70 km deep into the island . In the middle, just east of the city center, is the Sakura-jima volcano . There are other parts of the city at the foot of the active volcano. The volcano ejects ash at irregular intervals, which pollutes infrastructure and people.
