Kirishima ( Japanese 霧 島 市 , -shi ) is the second largest city in Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan . It was created on January 7, 2007 by merging the city of Kokubu with the six communities of Mizobe, Yokogawa, Makizono, Kirishima, Hayato and Fukuyama.

Kirishima is located northeast of Kagoshima and west of Miyakonojō at the northern end of Kagoshima Bay .

The northern part is strongly volcanic and famous for its numerous onsen (hot springs), each summarized as "Kirishima Onsen-kyō" (including Maruo-Onsen), "Kirishima-jingū-kyō", "Myōken-Anraku- kyō ”.
