Amami ( Japanese 奄 美 市 , -shi ) is a city on the island of Amami-Ōshima in Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan .

history

It was founded on March 20, 2006 from the union of the city of Naze ( 名 瀬 市 , -shi ), the municipality of Kasari ( 笠 利 町 , -chō ) and the village of Sumiyō ( 住 用 村 , -son ) of the Ōshima district .
