The Amami Airport ( Japanese 奄 美 空港 Amami Kūkō ) is the airport on the island of Amami-Ōshima and is located within an exclave of the city of Amami , which belongs to the Kagoshima Prefecture in Japan . Japanese law classifies the airport as a third class airport .
Transport links and location
The airport is located on the north-eastern edge of the island. The accessibility from the island's capital (about 30 kilometers by road from the starting center) or the southern edge of the island (60 kilometers by road) is therefore not optimal. The airport is located directly on Prefecture Street 82. There is a bus connection to the city center of Amami, the former Naze , at irregular intervals, which vary between half an hour and a full hour , with a journey time of just under an hour.
history
On July 10, 1988, the new Amami Airport was opened. This was built on an artificially raised peninsula parallel to the existing coastline. This means that arrival and departure always take place above the sea. The old airport was about two kilometers southwest of the current location inland. Parts of the old runway are still in place today.
Airlines
The airport is used by JAL Express ( Itami Airport ), Japan Air Commuter ( Kagoshima , Kikai Airport and Okinoerabu airport ) and Ryukyu Air Commuter ( Naha Airport served).
Airport facilities
The airport has a 2,000 by 45 meter wide runway, which is why modern, large passenger aircraft can land on it. The terminal has several parking spaces, but only one is equipped with a passenger boarding bridge .
