history

A knight, whose descendants called themselves "von Mellrich", acquired the Mellrich court from the Lords of Eberstein in 1181. The Eggeringhausen house was first mentioned in 1382. In the 14th century, the former castle was located in the vicinity of the former Mellrich train station. At that time the Knights von Meldereke were at home on the estate. Noldecke von Mellrich sold the property to Goddert zu Kettler in 1483 . In 1603, Count Johann von Ostfriesland and Rietberg acquired the property.

Anna Catharina Countess zu Salm-Reiferscheid had the moated castle still standing today expanded into a widow's residence in 1660. In 1829 Baron Friedrich von Fürstenberg bought the estate from Prince Aloys von Kaunitz-Rietberg . In 1908, Lothar von Fürstenberg (1870–1951), previously bailiff von Schmallenberg , took over the management of the family estate from his late brother Friedrich von Fürstenberg (1867–1907).

The castle has been in the possession of the von Fürstenberg- Körtlinghausen family for several years , and the clergyman Michael von Fürstenberg (1942–2012) was one of the owners .
