Johann III. (Ostfriesland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann III. from the house of Cirksena (* 1566 in Aurich ; † January 23, 1625 in Rietberg ) was the younger brother of Count Enno III. from East Frisia . He founded the Catholic branch of the Cirksena in the Westphalian county of Rietberg , the so-called Haus Ostfriesland.

Johann married Sabina Catharina, his brother Enno's daughter, in 1601. In the Berum settlement, this had been awarded the legacy of the County of Rietberg, which had come to the Cirksena family through her mother Walburg von Rietberg together with the Harlingerland . Johann had returned to the Catholic faith early on . The marriage between the close relatives took place after papal permission ( dispensation ).

Together with his wife, who also became Catholic in 1601, he reversed the Reformation in the County of Rietberg. Because of his Catholic denomination, the door and gate for a career in imperial service were open to him. So he became an officer in the imperial and Spanish service. Johann also recaptured Paderborn's Protestant episcopal city for the bishop of Paderborn in 1604 and was not innocent of atrocities against the population.

The foundation of a Franciscan monastery in Rietberg showed that Johann had not only converted for political reasons . After the death of his wife in childbed with the birth of their eleventh child in 1618, Johann ruled the County of Rietberg until his own death in 1625. He had his residence Schloss Rietberg equipped with modern fortifications and the main building redesigned in the Weser Renaissance style.
