background

With the death of Balthasar , the ruling family of the Attena chieftains in the Harlingerland became extinct and the Harlingerland fell to the Count's House of Rietberg, which was closely related to the Attena. Johann von Rietberg , the son of Balthasar's sister, took over the rule. His second daughter Walburg was given the Harlingerland as an inheritance. She married Count Enno III in 1581. from East Frisia. From this marriage two daughters emerged who, due to the Berumer settlement, renounced the Harlingerland in favor of his son from his first marriage.

Sabina Catharina and her sister Agnes ceded the splendor of Esens , Stedesdorf and Wittmund and thus the entire Harlingerland to their father in the Berumer comparison . For this, a settlement of 200,000 thalers was initially agreed, which was later increased to 300,000 thalers. The older sister Sabina was also awarded the County of Rietberg . On September 19, 1600, the treaty was confirmed by Emperor Rudolf II and a little later by the Harling liege Archduke Albrecht as Duke of Geldern . The Berum comparison ended the more than four hundred year independent history of the Harlingerland.

aftermath

In 1622 the Mansfelder stole the 300,000 Reichstaler packed in barrels, which according to Berumer comparison were intended for Agnes or her husband, the Prince of Liechtenstein. So the debts were not paid. In 1663 the demands were renewed. Since Ostfriesland could not pay under Prince Georg Christian , the Prince-Bishop of Münster was appointed debt collector and invaded Ostfriesland. Only with the help of the States General and Duke Eberhard von Württemberg could the Münster troops be driven out, a compromise brokered and the sum raised by another 200,000 thalers.
