The Itami Airport ( Japanese 大阪国際空港 Osaka Kokusai Kuko , German , International Osaka 'airport , English Osaka International Airport ) is a Japanese commercial airport in the region Kinki in Japan . It lies partly in the cities of Ikeda and Toyonaka of Osaka Prefecture and for the most part in the city of Itami , Hyōgo Prefecture . It serves the Kansai metropolitan area with the largest city of Osaka and almost exclusively other national destinations. According to Japanese legislation, Osaka-Itami Airport is classified as a first class airport despite mostly “only” national destinations .
The airport is completely within a built-up area, which is why there are repeated discussions about ceasing flight operations in favor of Kansai Airport . However, it is popular with passengers as it is much closer to downtown Osaka than Kansai Airport.
There are two other airports in the region: Kansai Airport is mainly responsible for international flights and, since 2006, the competitor Kobe Airport has been responsible for national flights . The “Conference on the Renewal of Administration” proposed a merger in order to save costs. While Tōru Hashimoto , the former governor of Osaka, supported a closure to strengthen Kansai Airport, Toshizō Ido , governor of Hyōgo, and the Hyōgo prefectural parliament want to keep Itami Airport.
At the end of 2015, a contract was signed with the airport operator ORIX / VINCI, which will manage both Itami and Kansai airports for 44 years. It serves as the hub for All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines .
