history
In the middle of the Sengoku period , the center of Itami became a prosperous city. Its name was Itami-go (City of Itami) and it was known as the only Japanese city within a castle complex - Japanese castles are usually located outside of urban areas. Itami-go was part of the Arioka Castle administered by Araki Murashige under the rule of Oda Nobunaga . After the uprising and defeat of Arakis, the castle was destroyed.
The present city was founded on November 10, 1940 . Large parts of the city were destroyed during the great Hanshin earthquake in 1995 , but they were quickly rebuilt.
