Takasago ( Japanese 高 砂 市 , - shi ) is a Japanese city on the main island of Honshū in Hyōgo prefecture on the Japanese Seto Inland Sea .
geography
The city is located about 40 kilometers from Kobe and borders the city of Kakogawa in the north and east and the city of Himeji in the west .
history
Takasago emerged from a settlement that was founded in the mouth of the Kakogawa River. It got its name as a reference to the sand washed up in the river mouth, because taka means high and sago means sand .
Before the Edo period Takasago was a pretty small settlement, but by 1600 was Ikeda Terumasa the ruler or daimyo to Himeji Castle . From then on, Takasago flourished as a port. Ikeda Terumasa ordered the construction of a canal to the Kakogawa River. Special boats called Takasebune ( 高 瀬 船 ) transported the rice from the upper reaches of the river to the port. However, as the roads improved, Takasago's importance as a port waned.
The place received its town charter on July 1, 1954 .

Takasago is now an industrial city and has paper mills, food processing, metal processing, ceramics and chemical plants.
