Amagasaki ( Japanese 尼 崎 市 - shi ) is a city in Hyōgo prefecture on the Japanese main island of Honshū . The city located between the cities of Osaka and Kobe in Osaka Bay at the mouth of the Yodo River is part of the Kansai agglomeration.

history

Amagasaki has been an ancient castle town since Hosokawa Tadakuni built a castle there in the early 16th century . Most recently, a branch of the Matsudaira resided in Amagasaki until 1868 with an income of 68,000 koku .

On April 1, 1916 , Amagasaki received city rights.

The city was badly damaged by US bombers during World War II.

On April 25, 2005 at 9:18 a.m. local time, during the Amagasaki train accident between the Tsukaguchi and Amagasaki stations, an express train of around 700 people on the Fukuchiyama Line , operated by JR West , derailed in a curve in front of a level crossing Osaka and Fukuchiyama cities . Five of the total of seven train wagons jumped out of the rails, some of them badly damaged a nine-story house standing next to the tracks. The accident resulted in 107 deaths and 540 injuries. It was the worst train accident in Japan since 1963 (when 161 people were killed in a collision near Tokyo ).
