Matsunaga won the Shiki Prize in 1992 in a competition organized by the manga magazine Afternoon . The award-winning short story Killing Paranoia ( き り ん ぐ ぱ ら の い あ , Kiringu Paranoia ) then appeared in the afternoon , making it the first comic he published as a professional draftsman.

From 1993 to 1997 he drew the manga series Bakune Young ( バ ク ネ ヤ ン グ , Bakune Yangu ) for the Young Sunday magazine of the Shōgakukan publishing house , in which a young man decides to take action against the Yakuza . The manga was also published in two anthologies, and in 2000 an art book on Bakune Young was published.

After Bakune Young , he was mostly for the alternative Ikki magazine, for which he worked from the first issue. In this magazine from 2000 to 2001 his Angel Mark ( エ ン ゼ ル マ ーjer , Enjeru Māku ) and from 2002 to 2005 Ryūguden ( 龍 宮殿 ) was published. The latter comic, based on the legend of Tarō Urashima , is about two boys in rabbit costumes who take a train to a city in the sea where fish people live. The publishing house Shogakukan also published Ryūguden in three edited volumes.

His work has been translated into English and Italian.
