Shōgakukan ( Japanese 株式会社小学 館 Kabushiki-gaisha Shōgakukan , English Shogakukan Inc. ) is a Japanese publisher that is known outside of Japan for its wide range of manga . In addition, the company, which was founded in 1922 as a publisher of teaching materials, publishes magazines, picture books, encyclopedias and novels and has sales of almost 100 billion yen (as of 2017) . Together with Shueisha and Hakusensha, he belongs to the Keiretsu of the Hitotsubashi Group . The publisher has awarded the Shogakukan Manga Prize to manga artists every year since 1955 .

history

The publishing house was founded on August 8, 1922 by Takeo Ōga ( 相 賀 武夫 ) originally as a distributor of teaching magazines for elementary school students in the fifth and sixth grades. In 1926 Shōgakukan founded the Shūeisha publishing house, which in turn became the Hakusensha publishing house.

After the Second World War , the publishing house was re-established and reissued learning materials. Later also fiction appeared, especially collections of world literature, for school children as well as mangas. The publisher's first manga magazine was Shōnen Sunday , which has been published weekly since 1959. In 1962 Shogakukan began to publish encyclopedias and dictionaries, especially in illustrated form. This was followed by the launch of magazines for the adult audience.

Together with Shūeisha, Shōgakukan established the Viz Media publishing house in the United States . Masahiro Ōga ( 相 賀 昌宏 ), the founder's grandson, is currently in charge of the publishing house. In August 2009, Shōgakukan and Shūeisha acquired the Swiss company Anime Virtual and the French distribution company Kazé .

Publishing program

The publisher still publishes school books these days, but children's books, fiction, illustrated books, atlases, encyclopedias, encyclopedias, dictionaries, guides, mangas and a variety of manga magazines and magazines for the general public are also part of the program.
