Jules Bastide

Jules Bastide (born November 21, 1800 in Paris , † March 2, 1879 ibid) was a French politician and journalist.

Life

The son of a broker was a student at the Lycée Henri IV , studied law for a while and worked in the wood business. In 1821 he joined the Charbonnerie , which campaigned against the monarchy during the Restoration . After the July Revolution of 1830 Bastide received a post as artillery captain of the National Guard, but remained in opposition to the monarchy under Ludwig Philipp . On June 5, 1832, he attended General Lamarque's funeral and was sentenced to death in the ensuing uprising. Bastide escaped from prison and went into exile in London. After returning to Paris two years later, he was acquitted by a jury. In 1836 he took up a career with the Republican newspaper Le National and headed it for some time after the death of Armand Carrel . Ten years later, due to philosophical differences of opinion with most of the newspaper's staff, he left the editorial team and worked with Philippe Buchez on the Revue nationale . After the February Revolution of 1848 he was appointed Secretary General in the Foreign Ministry on February 28, 1848, and on May 11, 1848 he took over the ministerial office, which he held until December 20, 1848 - with a short interruption. Before that, on May 23rd, a member of the Assemblée constituante for the Seine-et-Marne department was elected. After Louis Napoleon's coup d'état in 1851, he withdrew from public life. In 1857 he ran unsuccessfully for election to parliament. Bastide died in Paris on March 2, 1879.
