Carrel went to Paris and joined Adolphe Thiers , François Mignet and Augustin Thierry . On Thierry's advice, he wrote a book on the history of Scotland . In 1827 there was a description of the counter-revolution in England under Charles II and Jacob II .

After the revolution he became the first editor of this newspaper. In the following July monarchy he adhered to his republican principles under hostility and persecution, defended them in a duel against a legitimist journalist in 1833 and was sentenced to six months in prison in 1834. Even after that, he continued to advocate his political views, for example before the Chamber of Peers in the trial of Michel Ney , whereupon he was sentenced to a fine of 10,000 francs and two years in prison after the onset of tumults, and the National was persecuted and punished with great severity from then on .

After offensive attacks by Émile de Girardins , editor of the newly founded newspaper La Presse , on the National and on Carrel, there was a duel between the two on July 22, 1836. Carrel suffered an injury to which he succumbed two days later. His funeral became the occasion for a demonstration by liberals against the government.
