Ary Scheffer (born February 10, 1795 in Dordrecht , Batavian Republic , † June 15, 1858 in Argenteuil , French Empire ) was a French painter of Dutch origin.

Life

Ary Scheffer was the son of the painter Jean-Baptiste Scheffer (1765–1809) and his wife, the miniature painter Cornelia Lamme . The painter Henry Scheffer was his brother. Scheffer came to The Hague with his family in 1797 and lived in Amsterdam from 1808 to 1810 .

At the age of 17, Scheffer moved to Paris in 1812 and became a student of Baron Pierre Narcisse Guérin . In his studio, Scheffer was also influenced in his style by Guérin's students Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix . He made his debut in the Salon of 1819 with his painting The Sacrifice of the Citizens of Calais .

Ary Scheffer died on June 15, 1858 at the age of 63. The sculptor Cornelia Scheffer (July 29, 1830 in Paris † December 20, 1899 ibid.) Is his daughter.

One student was Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi , who created the Statue of Liberty in New York.

His Paris home is now the " Musée de la Vie romantique ". Almost the entire estate of the artist is kept in the “ Museum Ary Scheffer ” in Dordrecht.
