Awaji ( Japanese 淡 路 市 , - shi ) is a city on the island of Awaji-shima in Hyogo Prefecture in Japan .
history
The city was created on April 1, 2005 from the merger of the communities Awaji ( 淡 路 町 , -chō ), Higashiura ( 東浦 町 , -chō ), Hokudan ( 北 淡 町 , -chō ), Ichinomiya ( 一 宮 町 , -chō ) and Tsuna ( 津 名 町 , -chō ) of Tsuna County . The population of the urban area has decreased by 22% since 1960 from 66,305 at that time to 51,884.
