Latrobe City is a local administrative area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria , which also has city status. The area is 1425.6 km² and has about 73,000 inhabitants.

Latrobe is about 150 km east of the capital Melbourne in southeast Victoria and includes six major localities: Boolarra, Churchill, Yallourn North, Moe , Traralgon and Morwell. The City Council is located in Morwell in central Latrobe.

Latrobe City is located in the Latrobe Valley , the center of lignite mining and power generation in Victoria. The coal-fired power plants in Loy Yang , Hazelwood, Morwell and Yallourn are among the largest in Australia. Loy Yang alone covers a third of the state's electricity consumption. The disadvantage of generating electricity from lignite, however, is the high CO 2 emissions. The Hazelwood Power Station , the power plant according to the WWF, in which all the leading industrial nations, the largest share of CO compared to the power plants 2 is applicable. Hazelwood alone is responsible for over 5% of greenhouse gas emissions in all of Australia.

administration

The Latrobe City Council has nine members who are elected by residents of the nine wards. These nine districts are: Burnett, Dunbar, Farley, Firmin, Galbraith, Gunyah, Merton, Rintoull, and Tanjil. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
