The Shire is named after the Pyrenees Ranges, a chain of hills with a summit at 760 m, which was named after the Spanish Pyrenees. The area was first discovered by ranchers before gold discoveries started a gold rush in 1852. Back then, up to 100,000 people are said to have searched for gold in the Beaufort area.

After that, agriculture and forestry took over the main role in the Shire and today 28% of the population are employed in the agricultural sector. Above all, the wool industry and grain cultivation provide the main sources of income. In addition, the Pyrenees are one of the six main wine-growing regions of Victoria.
