Coordinates: 37 ° 44 ′  S , 142 ° 1 ′  E The Southern Grampians Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 6654.0 km² and has about 16,000 inhabitants.

Southern Grampians is located in southwest Victoria about 270 km west of the capital Melbourne and includes the following towns: Balmoral, Cavendish, Coleraine, Wannon, Hamilton, Dunkeld, Branxholme, Byaduk and Penshurst. The seat of the City Council is in Hamilton in the southern half of the LGA, which has about 8900 inhabitants.

The city is called "Wool Capital of the World", the world capital of wool. There are around six million sheep within 50 miles of Hamilton and wool production here accounts for 15% of the total output of all of Australia. The city's landmark is a five- piece building in the shape of balls of wool called The Big Wool Bales , which contains a wool museum.

Ansett Airways was founded in Hamilton in 1936 , which had been one of Australia's two leading airlines until the turn of the millennium, but then went bankrupt.

The Shire takes its name from the mountain range of the Grampians , which run northwest of the Shire. To the north is the Grampians National Park and to the west is the Coonararra wine region.

The Southern Grampians Shire Council has seven members who are elected by LGA residents. Southern Grampians is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
