Coordinates: 36 ° 8 ' S , 144 ° 45' O Campaspe Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 4518.9 km² and has about 37,000 inhabitants.
Campaspe is located on the northern border of Victoria about 200 km away from the capital Melbourne and includes the following towns: Echuca , Kyabram, Rochester, Rushworth, Tongala, Gunbower, Echuca Village, Strathallan, Stanhope, Bamawm, Ballendella, Whroo, Patho, Wyuna, Myola , Lancaster, Timmering, Tennyson, Lockington, Toolleen, Torrumbarry, Nanneella, Girgarre, Corop and Colbinabbin. The City Council is based in Echuca on the border with New South Wales .
In the second half of the 19th century, the city of Ecucha was of particular strategic importance. Not only is it located at the confluence of three waterways (Campaspe, Goulbourn and Murray Rivers), but here the largest of the rivers, the Murray River , is the closest to the metropolis of Melbourne. So the city became the largest inland port in Australia and a railway junction. By the end of the century, however, due to the economic crisis and the decline in the importance of the waterways, it had lost its special position and a considerable part of the population.
Today the city, together with Moama on the other side of the border in New South Wales, is a major tourist center around the Murray River and the old port and has, among other things, the largest fleet of paddle steamers in the world. The rest of the Shire lives mainly from agriculture. Nestlé and Heinz as well as the Australian company Bonlac have larger production facilities here.
The Campaspe Shire has a partnership with the East Timorese Lequidoe .
administration
The Campaspe Shire Council has seven members who are elected by residents of the six wards. One Councilor each comes from the districts of Western, Central, Waranga, Kyabram and Deakin Ward, and two come from Echuca Ward. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
