Coordinates: 37 ° 53 ′ S , 145 ° 10 ′ E Monash City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Monash belongs to the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area named after John Monash is 82 km² and has about 180,000 inhabitants.
Monash is 16 to 16 km east of Melbourne city center and contains 13 neighborhoods: Ashwood , Chadstone, Clayton, Glen Waverley, Hughesdale, Huntingdale, Mount Waverley, Mulgrave, Notting Hill, Oakleigh, Oakleigh East, Oakleigh South and Wheelers Hill. The City Council is located in Glen Waverley.
The city has several shopping centers. The shopping center in Chadstone with 132,000 m² is the second largest in Melbourne and has over 200 clothing stores. It is the third largest in Australia by sales.
Monash also has a large share of industry. Mechanical engineering, chemical and printing industries are predominant here.
The Clayton Campus is the largest site of Monash University with its own particle accelerator, the Australian Synchrotron with a 216 m long storage ring.
Oakleigh has a larger community of mid-20th century Greek immigrants.
The Melbourne Olympic Skating Center is located in the Oakleigh South neighborhood.

The Monash City Council has eleven members elected by the residents of the four wards (three councilors each from Mount Waverley, Mulgrave and Oakleigh, and two from Glen Waverley). These four districts are determined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
