Yarra Ranges is part of the Outer Metropolitan Area of Melbourne , the outer metropolitan area of the capital of Victoria. With an area of 2,460 km², the area is the city's largest LGA and has around 150,000 inhabitants.

Yarra Ranges is 34 to 80 km from the city center at the northeast end of Melbourne and contains 51 neighborhoods and towns: Badger Creek, Belgrave , Belgrave Heights , Belgrave South, Chirnside Park, Chum Creek, Coldstream, Dixons Creek, Don Valley, Ferntree Gully Upper, Ferny Creek, Gruyere, Healesville , Kallista, Kalorama, Kilsyth, Launching Place, Lilydale, Macclesfield, Menzies Creek, Millgrove, Monbulk, Montrose, Mooroolbark, Mount Dandenong, Mount Evelyn, Narre Warren East, Olinda, Sassafras , Selby, Seville, Seville East, Sherbrooke, Silvan, Steels Creek, Tarrawarra, Tecoma, The Patch, Tremont, Upwey, Wandin East, Wandin North, Warburton , Warburton East, Wesburn, Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen, Yarra Junction, Yellingbo and Yering. The Shire is located in hilly to mountainous terrain. About in the middle is Mount Donna Buang. At the summit, at 1250m, there is usually snow in winter, making it the closest snow area to Melbourne city center. In the Yarra Ranges, due to the geological conditions, a number of reservoirs have been created, the largest on the Yarra River being the Upper Yarra Reservoir , and the Silvan and Maroondah Reservoirs . The area thus makes an important contribution to the water supply of the metropolis Melbourne.

The 633 m high Mount Dandenong in the middle of the Dandenongs is the location of the radio transmission masts for Melbourne, which are again between 72 m and 180 m high. Accordingly, when the weather is good, the view extends from the top of the mountain to the city center or Port Phillip Bay.

Yering was one of the early strongholds of Australian viticulture and gained international recognition at the end of the 19th century. After a temporary lull, the Yarra Valley is now a popular wine region again. In addition, a lot of fruit is grown on the agricultural areas of the Shire.

Belgrave in the southwest of the Shire is the starting point of Puffing Billy , Melbourne's only surviving historic steam train. The route of the tourist train leads southwest to Emerald Lake and through the north of the Cardinia Shire to Gembrook.

administration

The Yarra Ranges Shire Council has nine members who are elected by residents of the nine wards. These nine constituencies (Billanook, Chandler, Chirnside, Lyster, Melba, O'Shannassy, Ryrie, Streeton and Walling) are independent of the districts.
