Coordinates: 38 ° 6 ′ S , 147 ° 4 ′ E Wellington Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 10,817.3 km² and has about 43,000 inhabitants.
Wellington is located in the southeast of Victoria in the Gippsland region about 230 km east of the capital Melbourne and includes, among others, the following towns: Alberton, Balook, Boisdale, Briagalong, Cowwarr, Dargo, Glenmaggie, Coongulla, Golden Beach, Paradise Beach, Gormandale, Heyfield , Hollands Landing, Licola , Loch Sport, Longford, Maffra , Munro, Newry, Port Albert, Rosedale, Sale , Seaspray, Stratford, Tinamba, Woodside , Woodside Beach and Yarram. The City Council is located in Sale in the southern half of the LGA.
The first settlements appeared in Wellington in the 1830s. Villages grew during the gold rush years in eastern Gippsland when they served as stopovers on the way to Melbourne, especially in the pre-railroad era.
Wellington has many scenic and tourist attractions. The coastal towns of Seaspray, Golden Beach and Lochsport are located on Victoria's Ninety Mile Beach, the longest continuous sandy beach in Australia with over 151 km. Several national parks are located in the area, such as the Lakes National Park with the Gippsland Lakes, which include Lake Guthridge, Lake Guyatt, Lake Glenmaggie and Lake Wellington, the largest of the lakes. To the north follow the southern foothills of the Great Dividing Range and part of the Alpine National Park of Victoria, the largest national park in the state. There is mainly mountainous and wooded land here.
Longford is also home to Victoria’s oil and gas exploration center from the Bass Strait off the coast. An explosion in the central area of the Langford refinery and a two-day fire paralyzed gas supplies in Victoria in 1998, causing weeks of industrial, commercial and household outages across the state.
administration
Wellington Shire Council has nine members elected by LGA residents. Wellington is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
