Gippsland
Gippsland is a rural region in the Australian state of Victoria . It extends from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne to the border of the state of New South Wales and touches the mountain ranges of the Great Dividing Range in the north and the Bass Strait in the south . The region sustains itself economically through the extraction of raw materials, energy generation, agricultural production and tourism.
Originally only by the indigenous tribes of Gunai - and Bunurong - Aborigines inhabited settled after 1840 as originally "Caledonia Australis" said region increasingly Europeans. The area was named Gippsland by the Polish explorer Paweł Edmund Strzelecki in honor of the then governor of New South Wales , George Gipps .
According to the 2006 census, 239,648 inhabitants lived in the statistical region of Gippsland on an area of 45,371.1 km², of which approx. 80,000 in East Gippsland , approx. 52,000 in South Gippsland , about 34,000 in West Gippsland and about 74,000 in the Latrobe Valley .
