Coordinates: 37 ° 49 ′  S , 147 ° 37 ′  E East Gippsland Shire is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 20,940.2 km² and has about 45,000 inhabitants.

East Gippsland forms the eastern tip of Victoria and is about 300 to 500 km away from the capital Melbourne . The area includes: Allenvale, Bairnsdale , Benambra, Bendoc, Bruthen , Buchan, Ensay , Lakes Entrance , Mallacoota , Metung, Omeo , Orbost , Paynesville and Swifts Creek. The City Council is located in Bairnsdale in the southwest of the LGA.

The Gippsland was one of the first settlement areas of the Europeans in Victoria, who moved south from Sydney . As early as the mid-1830s, settlers settled in the area between Benambra and Omeo. From 1850 gold discoveries in the region around Omeo led to new and larger settlements. Before the arrival of the railroad, many cities on the route to Melbourne also benefited. As a historic gold rush town, Omeo is now a tourist attraction.

East Gippsland is Victoria's second largest LGA and three quarters of the area is national park. Accordingly, in addition to agriculture and forestry, tourism predominates here. Attractions are the Ninety Mile Beach, the longest continuous sandy beach in Australia (approx. 150 km long), and above all the Gippsland Lakes parallel to the coast west of Lakes Entrance. At the end of the 19th century, an artificial, permanent access route from Bass Strait to the lake area was created for large ships.

To the north of this, the Shires landscape is hilly to mountainous. The 300 km long Great Alpine Road, the highest paved road in Victoria, runs from Bairnsdale to Wangaratta. It leads through the Alpine National Park , which is located at the southern end of the Great Dividing Range . At Mount Hotham the road reaches its highest point at 1750 m. There are also some winter ski areas on and around the mountain.

administration

The East Gippsland Shire Council has eight members elected by the residents of the two wards. From each of these two districts, Waratah and Banksia, there are four Councilors. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
