Coordinates: 36 ° 13 '  S , 147 ° 10'  O Towong Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 6674.9 km² and has about 6000 inhabitants.

Towong is located in the extreme northeast of Victoria, about 340 km northeast of the capital Melbourne and includes the following towns: Bellbridge, Berringama, Bethanga, Biggara, Bullioh, Burrowye, Colac Colac, Corryong, Cudgewa, Dartmouth, Eskdale, Granya, Koetong, Mitta Mitta, Nariel Valley, Noorongong, Shelley, Ealgarno, Tallangatta , Tallangatta Valley, Tintaldra , Towong and Walwa. The City Council is located in Tallangatta on the northern border with New South Wales on Lake Hume .

Lake Dartmouth on the Mitta Mitta River and Lake Hume on the Murray River are two large reservoirs with 4 billion m³ and 3 billion m³ of storage space respectively, which ensure an even water supply across regional borders and across national borders. At 180 m, Dartmouth Dam is the highest dam in Australia and also makes a significant contribution to the electricity supply.

The Hume Reservoir is also the largest tourist destination in the region. Fishing and water skiing are the preferred activities here.

Towong Shire is sparsely populated and Corryong and Tallangatta are the only two larger towns with around 1,100 and 950 inhabitants respectively, with Tallangatta only being rebuilt in the 1950s after the original site was sacrificed to the Hume reservoir. Many smaller towns emerged as mining and gold digging settlements in the mountainous region of the Shires in the 19th century. Many residents work as commuters in the Albury - Wodonga urban area .

In Shelley, at an altitude of 800 m, there is Victoria's highest train station, but it has not been served since the 1980s.

administration

The Towong Shire Council has five members who are elected by the residents of the LGA. Towong is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
