Wodonga is a city in the Australian state of Victoria , 307 km northeast of Melbourne . It is on the south bank of the Murray River on the New South Wales border across the river from the town of Albury . Wodonga belongs to the Local Government Area Wodonga City and has 18,948 inhabitants. Together with Albury, the city forms a metropolitan area with around 89,000 inhabitants.

history

Wodonga was founded as a customs post across from its sister city Albury and grew steadily after the opening of the first bridge over the Murray River in 1860. The original name Wodonga was later changed to Belvoir, but the city was finally called Wodonga again. The first post office was opened on June 1, 1856 under the name Belvoir, but renamed Wodonga on July 26, 1869. The city has always been seen as the smaller, less successful sister of Albury and was once called "Struggle Town". Today it is still smaller than Albury, but economic growth in the region has leveled the differences.

economy

Important secondary and tertiary industries in Wodonga are LOGIC , a logistics center, a large cattle market, a pet food manufacturer (Mars Corporation), a cardboard factory (VISY), a slaughterhouse and foundry ( Bradken Ltd.), and various smaller companies. The city is also an administrative center.

This is where the Australian headquarters of Mars, Inc. is located. In Wodonga there is also a logistics base and a training center for technical trainees of the Australian armed forces , Latchford Barracks . There is also a campus of La Trobe University and the Wodonga Institute of TAFE.

There have been various attempts to manage both cities across the border to bring them together.

Sports

There are three football clubs in Wodonga, Wodonga Football Club , Wodonga Raiders Football Club and Wodonga Saints Football Club . Wodonga and Wodonga Raiders play in the Ovens & Murray Football League, while the Wodonga Saints play in the Tallangatta & District Football League . There are also many other sports clubs in the region. Daniel Bradshaw , who led the Brisbane Lions to victory twice, Fraser Gehrig , the famous St. Kilda Saints football striker , and Timothy Redenbach are all from Wodonga.

A number of cricket clubs play in the Albury Wodonga Cricket Competition (CAW), e.g. B. the Belvoir Eagles , the Wodonga Bulldogs and the Wodonga Raiders . Traditionally the Belvoir Eagles are the most successful.

Wodonga also has a horse racing club, the Wodonga & District Turf Club , which hosts around 7 competitions a year, including the Wodonga Cup in November.

Golfers play on the SS&A Wodonga course on Parkers Road.

Australian national soccer players Archie Thompson and Joshua Kennedy played for the Twin City Wanderers as children . The Wodonga Diamonds Football Club and the Wodonga Panthers Soccer Club are other football clubs in the city. All three play in the Albury-Wodonga Football Association .

Wodonga is home to the Apex Club of Wodonga, the Wodonga Lions Club and two Rotary clubs - Belvoir-Wodonga Rotory Club and Wodonga Rotary Club. Volunteering is important to the city of Wodonga. Without them, festivities such as Australia Day , Christmas Carols and the line-up of saints across town during Advent and Christmas couldn't be organized. Recently, “Apexian” Dean Freeman was voted National Apexian of the Year for his volunteer work in the region and abroad .
