Coordinates: 36 ° 7 '  S , 146 ° 53'  O Wodonga City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 432.7 km² and has about 39,400 inhabitants.

Wodonga is located on the northern border of Victoria on the Murray River about 300 km northeast of the capital Melbourne on the Hume Highway between Melbourne and Sydney and includes seven communities: Baranwartha North, Wodonga , Leneva, Bandiana, Baranduda, Bonegilla and Ebden. The City Council is located in the city of Wodonga in the north of the LGA on the border with New South Wales .

Together with Albury , north of the Murray River in New South Wales, the city forms a metropolitan area with 90,000 inhabitants, and over 175,000 people live in the extended catchment area with a radius of 100 km. In 1851 the two settlements were separated when the state of Victoria was drawn. In 1860 the first bridge was built over the Murray. Since it was on a cheap direct connection from Sydney to Melbourne, the railway was built from the southwest until 1873 and from the northeast until 1881. Until 1962, the two states still had different gauges, so that the two cities became an important reloading station for goods and passenger traffic. Even today, the region still benefits from its location in the Sydney - Canberra - Melbourne corridor.

In Wodonga there are large industrial settlements, so there is a large animal food manufacturer and wood processing industry (paper, cardboard) in the city, which rely on the extensive agriculture and forestry in the area. Wodonga also has five hospitals and is a university and military location.

administration

The Wodonga City Council has seven members who are elected by LGA residents. Wodonga is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
