Coordinates: 37 ° 52 ′  S , 145 ° 2 ′  E Glen Eira City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Glen Eira belongs to the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 37 km² and has about 140,000 inhabitants.

Glen Eira is 8 to 17 km southeast of Melbourne city center and contains 15 neighborhoods: Bentleigh, Bentleigh East, Caulfield, Caulfield East, Caulfield North, Caulfield South, Carnegie, Elsternwick, Gardenvale, Glen Huntly, McKinnon, Murrumbeena, Ormond, Ripponlea and part of St Kilda East. The seat of the City Council is in Caulfield South in the northwest part of the LGA.

After World War II, Glen Eira was one of the two fastest growing communities in Australia. A particularly large proportion of Jewish citizens live here (16.6%), especially in the Caulfield North district. Today the city has a higher average age and consists mainly of residential areas.

Caulfield is home to a Monash University campus with a wide range of subjects from arts and design to business, information technology and medicine. Around 13,400 students are registered on this campus, almost a quarter of all students at the university.

In the Elsternwick district is the Daily Planet brothel , which became famous because it was the first establishment of its kind in the world to be listed on the stock exchange in 2003.

The city is twinned with the Japanese city of Ōgaki .

administration

The Glen Eira City Council has nine members elected by the residents of the three wards (three councilors per ward). These three districts (Camden, Rosstown and Tucker) are defined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.

In 2005, the then council members were certified in a government investigation to work ineffectively and to be incapable of working together. The responsible minister from Victoria then dissolved the council. In new elections only one old council member was re-elected.
