Coordinates: 38 ° 3 ′  S , 144 ° 10 ′  E The Golden Plains Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 2703.4 km² and has about 22,000 inhabitants.

Golden Plains is located in the southern half of Victoria about 90 km west of the capital Melbourne between Geelong and Ballarat and includes the following towns: Haddon, Mannibadar, Gheringhap, Linton, Enfield, Rokewood, Meredith, Maude, Shelford, Bannockburn and Inverleigh. The seat of the City Council is in Bannockburn in the southeast of the LGA, a small town with about 5000 inhabitants.

During the gold rush in the 19th century, the area was primarily a transit station between the gold fields around Ballarat and the port city of Geelong. Otherwise the Shire is an agricultural region with predominantly cattle and poultry breeding and grain cultivation.

The Golden Plains Shire Council has nine members who are elected by the residents of the nine ridings. These nine counties are Bannockburn, Break-O-Day, Forest, Haddon, Ranges, Rivers, Ross Creek, Valley, and Woady Yaloak. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
