Mitchell is located in the center of Victoria and borders the capital Melbourne to the south . The area includes the following localities: Heathcote Junction, Tooborac, Puckapunyal, Seymour , Tallarook, Broadford, Kilmore, Clonbinane, Pyalong, Wandong, Wallan and Beveridge. The seat of the City Council is in Broadford in the center of the LGA, which has 3800 inhabitants.

The Shire is located on the Hume Highway , the main link between the metropolises of Melbourne and Sydney . It benefits from this and the proximity to the capital and is one of the fastest growing rural areas in Victoria.

Kilmore, which is about 60 km north of Melbourne city center, is believed to be Victoria's oldest inland settlement: it was founded around 1837 and mostly inhabited by Irish immigrants and has numerous historic buildings from the 19th century.

In Puckapunyal near Seymour there is also a large military base for the Australian land forces.
