Coordinates: 37 ° 3 ′  S , 142 ° 46 ′  E Northern Grampians Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 5729.9 km² and has about 11,439 inhabitants.

Northern Grampians is located in the center of west Victoria approximately 150 miles northwest of the capital Melbourne and includes the following localities: St Arnaud, Marnoo West, Navarre, Glenorchy, Stuart Mill, Moyreisk, Lubeck, Stawell, Halls Gap and Great Western. The seat of the City Council is in Stawell in the south of the LGA, a city with about 5500 inhabitants.

After sheep and cattle breeders first came to the region in the middle of the 18th century, larger towns emerged in the times of the gold rush after 1850 . After the deposits seemed exhausted in the meantime, new gold was discovered in the 1980s and today the Stawell Gold Mine is the largest gold mine in Victoria.

The Shire lies northeast of the Grampians mountain range and the 300-inhabitant town of Halls Gap is the only larger settlement in the 167,000 hectare Grampians National Park . The area is particularly known for the millennia-old Aboriginal rock paintings , for example in Bunjil's Shelter.

Stawell is also known for the prestigious Stawell Gift sprint race , which has been held at Easter since 1878. This is a 120 m race on grass with a handicap system, which means that weaker sprinters get a lead of up to 10 meters. The final of the race will be broadcast live on Australian television and the winner will receive a prize of 40,000 Australian dollars.

administration

The Northern Grampians Shire Council has nine members who are elected by the residents of the two wards. Of these two districts, Bolangum has three Councilors and Grampians six. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
