Coordinates: 37 ° 17 ′  S , 142 ° 55 ′  E The Rural City of Ararat is a Local Government Area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 4,211.1 km² and has about 11,600 inhabitants.

The rural community of Ararat is located approximately 200 km west of the capital Melbourne and includes the following localities: Pomonal, Armstrong, Elmhurst, Moyston, Ararat , Warrak, Buangor, Maroona, Rossbridge, Willaura, Wickliffe, Lake Bolac, Estmere and Streatham. The seat of the Rural City Council is in the village of Ararat in the north, which has about 7000 inhabitants.

The area around Mount Ararat, which is named after the biblical Mount Ararat , is a hilly, agricultural region. The land serves as pastureland, especially for sheep breeding. It is also located on the eastern edge of the Grampians wine region.

At Buangor in the Challicum Hills there is a large wind farm , which when completed in 2003 was the largest wind farm in Australia.

The town of Ararat, which was founded in 1857 after gold was found in the area, is of particular tourist interest, especially the J Ward , which was the former district prison and madhouse, and Lake Bolac for water sports enthusiasts and anglers.

The Ararat Rural City Council has seven members who are elected by LGA residents. Ararat is not divided into constituencies. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
