Ararat

Ararat is a city in the southwest of the Australian state of Victoria . It is located about 205 km west of Melbourne on the Western Highway , on the eastern slopes of the Ararat Hills in the valley of Cemetery Creek . In the 2016 census, 6,925 inhabitants were determined.

Ararat is the largest settlement in the Local Government Area Ararat Rural City and its administrative center.

The discovery of gold in 1857, during the Victorian gold rush , made Ararat a boom town that grew and prospered until the beginning of the 20th century. After that, the population decreased steadily. On May 24, 1950, Ararat was granted city status, but the population has continued to decline to this day.

The city was named after Mount Ararat 10 km west. This in turn received its name in 1841 from Horatio Wills .

Before the European settlement, the land of today's Ararat was inhabited by the Aboriginal tribe of the Tjapwurong .

The first Europeans settled in the Grampians in the 1840s after the explorer Thomas Livingstone Mitchell moved through the area in 1836. In 1841, while searching for land further south, Horatio Wills wrote in his diary: "like in the Ark we rested" (We camped like on Noah's ark). Hence he named the nearby hill Mount Ararat . The city was later named after the mountain.

The first post office opened on February 1, 1856, but was called Cathcart until August 31, 1857 .

In 1857 a group of Chinese miners found gold on their way to the gold fields in the center of Victoria at what was then called the 'Canton-Ader'. With that began the immense growth of Ararat. The Chinese community in Ararat was very large. The Gum San Chinese Heritage Center keeps her memory.

Rapid population growth spawned a parish that was registered as a suburb on September 24, 1858.

Ararat became the city of insane asylums. J Ward , an institution for the mentally ill offender, opened there in 1859. In 1865, the Aradale Mental Hospital opened a large hospital for the treatment of the mentally ill. Both facilities were then closed again, but to this day remain mementos of the city's role as a center for the treatment of mentally ill patients.

In 1863, French settlers planted vines.

economy

Ararat's economy essentially comprises various branches of agriculture, such as sheep farming for wool, cattle farming for meat and viticulture in the Grampians. There are also a number of wind farms in the area, such as B. in the Challicum Hills , which feed large amounts of renewable energy into the power grid.

There are also a number of service companies in the health sector and in administration in the city. It is also a regional trading center. The Hopkins Correctional Center (prison) is also in Ararat.

Tourism through the neighboring Grampians National Park and the wine-growing businesses in the Grampians is a small but important industry with 150 jobs that generate AU $ 8 million annually. Even more important is the impact on the local economy, where tourists spend AU $ 270 million annually.
