The largest city in western Victoria was founded in 1840 as a whale and sealer settlement. Because of the natural harbor, it was well suited for a permanent settlement. The name comes from the language of the Aborigines and was the name for a nearby volcanic cone. A post office was opened in 1849. During the Victorian Gold Rush in the 1850s, the city experienced a boom and the population grew rapidly.
Today Warrnambool lives economically from agriculture and tourism. The place is considered the starting point for trips along the Great Ocean Road east and west to Port Fairy and Portland . The city is at the western end of the most famous part of the Great Ocean Road.
The main attraction is the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum & Village , a recreated harbor from the Victorian era with buildings and ships from that era. In the adjacent Surf Bay can Südkapern ( Southern Right Whales ), a right whale -Art be observed at calving.
