Senlis [ sɑlis ] is a French municipality with 14,277 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Oise and the region Hauts-de-France .

geography

Senlis is located in the north of France on the Nonette River , just under 50 kilometers from Paris. Senlis is also about 50 kilometers away from the capital of the department, Beauvais . Compiègne , another important city in the Oise department, is 33 kilometers north of Senlis . Before the territorial reform of 2016, Senlis was part of the historical cultural region of Picardy .

history

The menhirs of the Indrolles have left prehistoric traces . Senlis was the old capital of the Celtic Silvanekter , was already at an important intersection of two streets, and was called Augustomagus by the Romans . The base of a statue for the emperor Claudius from AD 48 is a reminder of this time.

The construction site of the Notre-Dame Cathedral was opened in 1153, the building was consecrated on June 16, 1191. At the west portal there is a building sculpture from around 1170 with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary; depicted is the death and the assumption of Mary body and soul into heaven as well as her coronation. Around 1240 the church was extended by a transept with a crossing, the south tower was raised in the 13th century. In 1504, a lightning strike set the cathedral on fire, making it necessary to partially rebuild it. From 1530 to 1534, the upper storey and the facade of the south transept were renewed in the flamboyant style.
