Bernard Cazeneuve (born June 2, 1963 in Senlis ) is a French politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS). From December 2016 to May 2017 he was French Prime Minister . Previously, he was Minister of the Interior from April 2, 2014 .

Life

Cazeneuve studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Bordeaux . From 2007 until shortly after he entered the government in May 2012 and shortly after the election of the National Assembly in June 2012, he was one of the five or four MPs who represented the Department of Manche in the National Assembly ; his mandate expired due to the incompatibility with a government function. On May 16, 2012, he became Minister for European Affairs in the Ayrault I and Ayrault II cabinets of Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault , responsible for nuclear policy . In the course of a cabinet reshuffle (resignation of Jérôme Cahuzac ), Cazeneuve was appointed budget minister in the Ministry of Finance on March 19, 2013 .

Since the formation of the Valls I government on April 2, 2014, he has held the post of French interior minister, also in the Valls II cabinet . As such, he was the minister responsible for the measures following the various Islamist attacks in France in 2015 and 2016 (including January 7, 2015 in Paris , November 13, 2015 in Paris , July 14, 2016 in Nice ) and for handling the State of emergency that has existed since November 2015.

On December 6, 2016, he was appointed Prime Minister after Manuel Valls resigned . After Emmanuel Macron's victory in the 2017 presidential election , his government resigned on May 10, 2017, in accordance with the conventions. He was in office until May 15, 2017, when Édouard Philippe was appointed as his successor.

At the local level, Bernard Cazeneuve was Mayor of Cherbourg-Octeville from 2001 and President of the Communauté urbaine de Cherbourg from 2008 . He stepped down from both roles shortly after joining government in June 2012.
