François Rebsamen (born June 25, 1951 in Dijon ) is a French politician of the Parti Socialiste .

Life

Rebsamen studied law and economics and graduated with a master's degree in law and economics ( DESS ) and a diploma in political science. He is married and has one child.

From 2001 he was mayor of Dijon for the first time and from 2008 a member of the French Senate for Côte-d'Or . As a close associate of François Hollande , Rebsamen was considered number 2 in the Socialist Party from 1997 to 2008. From October 2011 he was, as the successor to Jean-Pierre Bel , who was elected President of the Senate, President of the Socialist Group in the Senate.

On April 2, 2014, Rebsamen was appointed Minister of Labor of France as part of the reshuffle of the Valls I cabinet . In this context, he had to resign his mandate in the Senate and the function of mayor. Didier Guillaume was his successor as group leader and Alain Millot as mayor. He retained the position of Minister of Labor even after the government was reshuffled to Valls II's cabinet .

After Millot's death, Rebsamen was re-elected Mayor of Dijon on August 10, 2015. On August 19, he therefore announced his resignation as minister in order to meet François Hollande's requirement not to combine any government office with an executive function at the sub-national level. Hollande did not immediately accept the resignation, but left Rebsamen in office until his successor Myriam El Khomri was appointed on September 2, 2015.
