Stéphane Le Foll [ ste 'fan lə' fɔl ] (born February 9, 1960 in Le Mans ) is a French politician of the socialist party PS and was French Minister of Agriculture from May 16, 2012 to May 10, 2017. Since 2014 he has also been a government spokesman. He was a member of the European Parliament .

Le Foll studied economics and graduated with a Diplôme d'études approfondies (1988) and a Diplôme professionnel spécialisé from the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers (1993). From 1987 to 1991 he taught economics in Rouillon and La Ferté-Bernard and gave courses at the University of Nantes .

From 1983 to 1995, Le Foll was a member of Longnes City Council ; From 2002 to 2004 he was a member of the Le Mans City Council and was Vice President of the Le Mans Metropolitan Region . From 1997 to 2008 he headed the cabinet of François Hollande , head of the Parti Socialiste. In November 2008 he was elected chairman of the PS in the Sarthe department .

In the 2004 European elections , Le Foll was elected to the European Parliament , to which he was a member until May 15, 2012. Here he was a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and, since the European elections in 2009 , has been deputy chairman of the social democratic group S&D .

Le Foll ran for the parliamentary elections in France in 2007 , but was defeated in the first ballot against his opponent, the conservative UMP , who later became Prime Minister François Fillon . In the French parliamentary elections in 2012 , Le Foll won a mandate in the Sarthe department , which, however, was suspended because of his work in the governments of the presidency of François Hollande . At first he was a member of the Ayrault I cabinet as Minister for Agriculture and Food , and in the following governments of Ayrault II , Valls I , Valls II and Cazeneuve he retained his portfolio. From the Valls I government he also held the function of government spokesman.
